The Holy See and Italy have signed an agreement to build a solar energy plant in the Vatican's Santa Maria di Galeria area just outside of Rome, aiming to supply Vatican City State with renewable energy.
Solar PV accounts for almost 80% of the global increase, followed by wind, hydropower, bioenergy and geothermal. In more than 80% of countries worldwide, renewable power capacity is set to grow faster between 2025 and 2030 than it did over the previous five-year period.
Solar PV capacity additions surged past 600GW globally in 2025, accounting for more than a quarter of total global energy demand growth and becoming the single largest contributor to new energy supply, according to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Global Energy Review 2025.
